Why do I do this?

I can’t be the only one, right? Start something, never finish. Make a goal, never accomplish it. What a shitty feeling. And yet, I do this ALL THE TIME. It’s a vicious cycle of wanting to become a “better person” and never fully committing. Maybe if I air my so-called dirty laundry into the web universe, I’ll be more likely to stick to my guns. Wishful thinking?

You see, I believe I live an average life of a 26 (!) year old. I have my own place, have a full-time job, and have an okayish social life. But yet I feel like I”m not living to my full potential. I read feel-good blogs daily, follow inspirational Instagram accounts, but I’m still stuck in a rut. I go through these phases of wanting to completely switch gears, but it never goes according to plan. Here’s why:

  1. Setting unattainable goals.  In some cases, it’s good to DREAM BIG. But if you want to achieve success in daily life, don’t set the bar so high.  Start small. Wake up 15 minutes earlier, spend less time on your phone, take that afternoon stroll. Establishing these small rituals will do you some good.
  2.  Not putting in the work. You want to learn the guitar? Practice. You’re not going to learn a whole song in an hour. If you don’t get the notes right away, don’t let the frustration stop you. Keep chugging along.
  3. Letting fear get in the way. Be a little more open. Form meaningful relationships and don’t have that wall up. It’s okay to be a bit vulnerable. Show people how you’re really feeling and let them in.
  4. Enjoy life’s moments, no matter how significant they are. You know the saying don’t sweat the small stuff? Well don’t look them over either. Take the long way home, dance in your underwear, have that glass of wine at the end of the day. Stop and smell the roses.

Even though I just wrote those 4 statements in third person, it was all relative to me. I’m hoping by just writing what I feel and having it out there to see, it sticks. But hey, Rome wasn’t built in a day.
